944.

A figure sculpture in clay working with a live model. Approximately 24" high and represents roughly 25 hours of effort.

A couple of Halloween-themed drawings...

This one is a water-color that's more than a little Discworld inspired...

A similar sketch on the iPad:

These are just some attempts at doodling/copying fabulous drawings from Gris Grimly's Grimericks

A little color pencil sketch:
It's ok if you find it disturbing. I do too...

A whimsical acrylic on canvas piece titled Doppleganger, primarily an experiment with transfering a printed image onto an acrylic-ready surface:

948.

This is an abstract piece partly inspired by Mark Rothko's work ... I was experimenting with Rothko's technique (layer upon layer of thin light glazes on a dark background) to see if I could 'capture the glow' in the lighter layer. The original canvas had the remanants of another painting that was closer to Jackson Pollocks 'drop style' - these gave the end piece a nice texture that changes based on the viewing ange ... (it's a bit hard to photograph correctly though)

I guess this counts as an ongoing creation: my newest cartoon blog is finally online:

An acrylic on canvas that's part of the same series as #954 earlier.

951.

(Finally, the 50th post). An abstract acrylic-on-panel painting that turned out a bit to bright for my liking. Back to the drawing board (quite literally!) on this one...

A fauvist portrait of a real-life model.

First comes the raw sketch along with a color study and a value study:

Here's the value study in more detail. This is done using a 2 color palette (+ white):

Now, with the application of color. At this stage it looks like quite the mess:

And here is the final completed portrait (with much experimentation in color):

954.

An abstract study.

The idea started as an exploration of mark making using a repeating pattern, in blacks, whites and grays:

Followed by a translation into color on paper:

Further refinement:

and finally a retranslation onto a larger canvas:

961.

Two self portraits in a Fauvist palette, which, for the record, do not actually look anything at all like me :)

Ok, how depressing. From Dec. to July, I've only managed to add these 40 entries to my blog. Picasso painted over 60,000 pieces in his lifetime and Van Gogh did 9000 just in a 10 year span. At this rate it's going to take me a 10 years to get to my 1000. Oh well, one step at a time ...

962.

A still life with lemon. Yellow is a tricky color to do ...

Final painting.

963.

This was a painting I did for an end-of-year show at the academy. It started as a pencil sketch:

A couple of intermediate test sketches ...

Here it is, work in progress...
Here's a frame-in-progress
And the final piece

The final painting, with a few color-theory lessons applied to it.

Another Color Pencil exercise, copying Paul Klee's 'New Harmony' (Guggenheim)

Tricky stuff this, trying to match exact colors in an oil painting with the colors in Color Pencils...

Another still life in Pastels featuring flowers, glass, and water. This one took the better part of a day:

(note to self: need a better picture of this one)

Now for something completely different. This video was one of 10 winners in the 2011 Seattle Times 3-Minute-Masterpiece Contest (which is held annually) and was (I kid you not) screened at the 2011 Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF).

971.

A still life with flowers, done in pastel. This one's a little bigger than usual. Tricky things, flowers .. you have to watch out for the shape, the transparency, the colors, the edges, the layering... I for one was glad to be done with this one (before I ruined it by overdoing it).
